Republican Brett Busby is running for reelection as Texas Supreme Court Justice, Place 8, in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. The Secretary of State’s final ballot certification lists Democrat Gisela D. Triana as his opponent.

Experience and education

According to his official court biography, Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Busby in 2019. The Texas Senate unanimously confirmed him, and he won election to a full term in 2020. His current term ends Dec. 31, 2026.

Before joining the Supreme Court, Busby practiced appellate litigation in Houston, served on the Fourteenth Court of Appeals and the Texas Multi-District Litigation Panel, and taught as an adjunct professor at the University of Texas School of Law.

The biography says he graduated with high honors from Duke University and Columbia Law School. He clerked for U.S. Supreme Court Justices Byron White and John Paul Stevens and Eleventh Circuit Judge Gerald Bard Tjoflat.

Busby is board certified in civil appellate law. His professional service includes leadership of the State Bar’s Appellate Section and Committee on Pattern Jury Charges, according to the court.

He oversees the Texas Access to Justice Commission and Foundation, which support civil legal services for Texans with limited means.
