Grapevine-Colleyville ISD trustees recognized the Colleyville Middle School Honor Band for finishing fifth in the state in the Texas Music Educators Association (TMEA) Honor Band competition at the board's Monday, Aug. 24 meeting.

The band placed fifth statewide.

Representatives from the band accepted the recognition on the group's behalf, according to a GCISD Facebook post the following day.

State judges evaluated audio recordings of the band's concerts from the 2025-26 school year. The top-scoring bands advanced to state finals in July. TMEA's state semi-finals were held July 15 and finals July 16, according to the association's website.

The recognition marked the first regular board meeting of the 2026-27 school year for the district, which serves about 13,541 students across 20 schools in Grapevine, Colleyville and Euless.

Other agenda items

The Aug. 24 meeting agenda also listed consent items presented by Chief Human Resources Officer Kelly Mires and informational items from Chief Academic Officer Dr. Shiela Shiver, Michael Crow and Chief Financial Officer Carla Settle. Meeting minutes have not yet been posted, so specific vote outcomes are not confirmed.

District earns A rating

The meeting comes as GCISD enters the new school year with an A rating from the Texas Education Agency, up from a B the previous year. The district earned an overall score of 91 and collected 59 distinction designations across 21 campuses, according to a district announcement on Aug. 14.

"The 2026 accountability results show that GCISD campuses are not only maintaining excellence but improving thanks to the hard work of our teachers, staff, parents and most importantly our students," Superintendent Dr. Jason Adams said in an Aug. 14 district release.

The district's 59 distinctions were up from 38 the previous year, with elementary campuses more than doubling their total from 12 to 30.
