Democrat Sarah Eckhardt is running for Texas comptroller of public accounts in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. The certified candidate list also names Republican Don Huffines, Green Party candidate Shehla Faizi and Libertarian V. Alonzo Echevarria-Garza.
Experience and education
In a Surround Sound Media questionnaire submitted Oct. 6, Eckhardt described herself as an attorney and public official serving in Texas Senate District 14. She listed previous service as Travis County judge, Precinct 2 commissioner and assistant county attorney, and education at the University of Texas’ LBJ School of Public Affairs and law school.
Questionnaire priorities
Eckhardt said she wants Texans to understand where their tax dollars go. She proposed auditing the education savings account program, investigating data-center tax exemptions and opening the state budget to public scrutiny.
Asked about revenue estimates, she emphasized careful analysis of economic trends and protecting the process from political pressure. For education savings accounts, she said she would enforce contractors’ obligations and report who benefits, which schools participate and where families have few options.
She questioned the sustainability of paying for school-property-tax reductions with temporary budget surpluses, and said renters and other struggling groups need consideration. She proposed analyzing tax exemptions and reporting their effectiveness to the Legislature, which she acknowledged sets tax policy.
These positions are drawn from her submitted questionnaire and are attributed to her.
Responses are based on public data and answers to a Surround Sound Media questionnaire if they were provided.
