Don Huffines, the Republican Texas comptroller of public accounts, is seeking election to a full term in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. The official ballot certification lists Democrat Sarah Eckhardt, Green Party candidate Shehla Faizi and Libertarian V. Alonzo Echevarria-Garza as his opponents.
Public service and business background
The comptroller’s official biography says Gov. Greg Abbott appointed Huffines and he was sworn in Aug. 1, 2026. He previously served in the Texas Senate.
Huffines founded real estate developer Huffines Communities in 1985 and holds a bachelor of business administration from the University of Texas at Austin, according to the agency biography.
Priorities
In his campaign’s appointment statement, Huffines emphasizes reducing waste and fraud, running government more efficiently and returning savings to taxpayers. A campaign update says he refused a taxpayer-funded salary and launched agency performance reviews.
