A stretch of East Hudgins Street in downtown Grapevine will close to all traffic starting in mid-August as crews replace aging water and sewer lines just steps from Historic Main Street.
Grapevine City Council approved a contract worth up to $660,000 with Fort Worth-based RUTS Construction at its July 21 meeting, according to Community Impact. The base contract is valued at $594,264, with a $65,369 contingency funded from the city's utility enterprise fund.
Crews will install 1,500 feet of 8-inch water main and 1,500 feet of 8-inch sewer main along East Hudgins Street between South Dooley Street and South Main Street. Once the underground work wraps, a full road reconstruction follows, expected to take four to six weeks.
The entire street will close during construction, according to Community Impact's reporting of city staff presentations.
The contractor has 75 calendar days to finish the job. Public Works Director Bryan Beck told Community Impact in July that "the construction should be completed by Thanksgiving."
Why it matters
The project addresses several infrastructure needs near the Grapevine Heritage Center and Historical Museum. City staff said the new mains will retire an aging lift station, boost fire protection along the corridor and expand water service capacity to the museum.
The upgrades also provide capacity for a planned restroom expansion at the Heritage Center to handle crowds during Christmas Capital of Texas events.
GrapeFest timing
The 40th annual GrapeFest is scheduled for Sept. 17–20 on Historic Main Street, drawing roughly 250,000 visitors. East Hudgins Street sits adjacent to the festival footprint, and the construction timeline overlaps with the event's dates. The city has not publicly stated whether the street will be clear before the festival opens.
Broader infrastructure push
The Hudgins project is part of a string of infrastructure investments by Grapevine this summer. Council also approved a separate $127,697 expenditure on July 7 to replace 45 aging traffic signal switches citywide.
Residents and businesses along East Hudgins Street should prepare for the full road closure beginning in mid-August, with work expected to wrap before Thanksgiving.
