Colleyville Heritage shut out Nevada Community 59-0 on Friday, Oct. 16. Grapevine fell 31-20 at state-ranked Lucas Lovejoy in the other District 3-5A Division II game, a loss that dents the Mustangs' playoff hopes heading into the final weeks of the regular season.

The Panthers dominated at GCISD Mustang-Panther Stadium behind senior receiver Trevi Preische, who hauled in 125 yards and five touchdowns, the Dallas Morning News reported. The 6-foot-3 slot target has 855 receiving yards and 12 touchdowns on the season, nearly doubling his junior-year total of 498 yards.

Sophomore quarterback Lane Vargas continued to build on a breakout first season as starter. Vargas ranks among the top Class 5A passers in the Dallas area with 1,862 yards through eight games, according to a Dallas Morning News profile of the young signal-caller. Head coach Jerry Edwards called Vargas "a film junkie" who wants to understand the reasoning behind every play.

"When you got a young kid that wants to know the why, that bodes extremely well for our football team," Edwards said.

Heritage piled up 309 total yards in the blowout, per MaxPreps. The Panthers lost a tight 35-38 game to Lovejoy on Sept. 25 and beat The Colony 24-17 on Oct. 2, keeping them in the thick of the district race.

In Lucas, the Mustangs could not keep pace with Lovejoy's ground attack. The Leopards, ranked No. 23 in the MaxPreps state rankings, improved to 7-1 overall and 3-1 in district. Grapevine dropped to 3-4 overall and 1-2 in district, sitting fifth in the standings, according to MaxPreps.

That puts head coach Ryan Smith's squad in a must-win stretch. Matt Diggs wrote on X that Grapevine's remaining matchup with The Colony now looks like a de facto playoff game for both teams.

Lovejoy junior quarterback Nixon Slaughter ranks 20th in Texas with 1,856 passing yards, and junior receiver Coleman Reaugh ranks sixth statewide with 924 receiving yards, per MaxPreps.

Heritage faces its biggest remaining test in Week 9, traveling to No. 7 Argyle at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 23. The Eagles are 7-1 overall and 4-0 in district after a 56-14 win over The Colony on Oct. 16.
