Mayes Middleton is the Republican candidate for Texas attorney general in the Nov. 3, 2026, general election. Democrat Nathan Johnson and Libertarian Tom Oxford are his opponents on the Texas secretary of state’s certified ballot.
Experience and education
His official Texas Senate biography identifies Middleton as the District 11 senator, serving since 2023 after representing a Texas House district from 2019 through 2022. He chaired the House Freedom Caucus during his last House term.
Middleton is president of Middleton Oil Company and also operates ranching, cattle and farming businesses. He holds bachelor’s and law degrees from the University of Texas at Austin, according to the Senate biography.
Campaign priorities
On his campaign website, Middleton says he would pursue border enforcement and human trafficking cases, uphold anti-abortion laws, enforce election laws, and sue companies over deceptive trade practices. He calls for enforcing open-records requirements and holding government entities accountable for public spending. He also supports stronger bonds for dangerous offenders and action against district attorneys he says refuse to enforce the law. These are his campaign positions.
