Tarrant County residents can earn up to $120 in rebates by swapping turfgrass for native plants through the Go N Grow program, which opened fall kit sales on Saturday, Aug. 15.

The program, run jointly by the Tarrant Regional Water District and nonprofit Rooted In, sells ready-to-plant garden kits with 24 native, water-wise plants each. Two options are available this fall: a Pollinator Garden designed for full sun and a Shade Garden. Both include planting guides, care instructions and sample garden designs.

Kits are available at rootedin.com/go-n-grow while supplies last.

The City of Southlake shared the program on its official Facebook page on Aug. 12, directing residents to register. The program is open to all Tarrant County residents, including those in Southlake, Grapevine, Colleyville and Westlake.

Two rebates stack to $120

Residents who attend a free online class called "Texas Plants and Pollinators" in September qualify for a $25 rebate on their kit. The class is listed on savetarrantwater.com.

A second, larger rebate of $95 is available for residents who remove turfgrass to make room for their native garden. Combined, the two rebates total $120.

County under 90-day burn ban amid drought

The program arrives as Tarrant County faces severe drought. On Aug. 13, the Tarrant County Commissioners Court approved a 90-day outdoor burn ban for all unincorporated areas after the Tarrant County Fire Marshal's Office and the Texas A&M Forest Service flagged escalating wildfire risk.

The ban runs through approximately Nov. 11.

Tarrant County Fire Marshal Kenny Wilson urged rural property owners to maintain a 30-foot mowed perimeter around homes and outbuildings and clear dry vegetation.

Different from the rain barrel program

Go N Grow is separate from the Save Tarrant Water rain barrel program we covered Aug. 14. That program offers discounted 55-gallon rain barrels with Colleyville pickup. Go N Grow focuses on replacing water-hungry lawns with native plants.
