Any Grapevine-Colleyville ISD student can walk into a portable building behind the district's administration offices and walk out with a homecoming dress, suit, shoes or jewelry without spending a dime.

The program is called Chic Boutique. Run by the GCISD Council of PTAs, it stocks hundreds of donated formal dresses in every size, an expanding menswear collection, plus ties, clutches and accessories.

Last year it put 107 dresses in students' hands, the Fort Worth Report reported, and the program has since added menswear to its inventory.

No income check. No ID. No eligibility form.

"We do not ask for income requirements or anything else … There's no checking to see who has what," Kira Allen-Lowe, who runs Chic Boutique with Jenny Royal, said in a Sept. 15 interview on KERA's NTX Now.

Allen-Lowe and Royal now run the boutique as their primary focus. Previously, the program was a side project managed by full-time district employees.

GCISD serves 13,541 students across 20 schools, and the boutique is open to all of them for banquets, cotillions, homecoming and prom.

Students who already have a dress can still stop in for shoes, jewelry or other accessories at no cost.

Allen-Lowe told KERA the reward is personal. She described seeing "the instant gratification in the kids' faces when they find the 'it' dress, and knowing that they don't have to pay astronomical prices for it."

How to donate or volunteer

Chic Boutique accepts gently used formal dresses, menswear, shoes and accessories year-round. Donors can drop items off at the main reception desk of the GCISD Administration Building, 3051 Ira E. Woods Ave. in Grapevine, during standard business hours. Financial contributions can be made online through the GCISD Council of PTAs website.

Volunteers must be at least 18, cannot be current GCISD students and must complete a district volunteer background check.
