Republican Armin Mizani will be the next state representative for Grapevine, Colleyville, Keller and Euless after defeating Democrat Cate Brennan in the Texas House District 98 race.

Mizani claimed victory based on unofficial election results, the Fort Worth Report reported Nov. 4. The results have not been canvassed.

In a Facebook post after the race was called, Mizani said he was humbled and honored that voters selected him to represent the district.

"Whether you supported our campaign or not, my commitment remains the same: to serve every family in House District 98, listen to the communities I represent, and stand firm for the values that make Texas special," Mizani said.

New face in Austin

The seat opened after Republican Rep. Giovanni Capriglione announced he would not seek reelection, ending a 13-year tenure in the Texas House, the Fort Worth Report reported in September.

Mizani, an attorney and founder of Mizani Law Firm, served on the Keller City Council from 2014 to 2018 before becoming Keller's mayor in 2020. He won the Republican primary in March against Fred Tate and Zdenka "Zee" Wilcox.

Brennan, a retired CEO who spent 30 years as a senior executive of a nonprofit healthcare association, won the Democratic primary against Aaron Hendley.

What he's promised

During the campaign, Mizani listed property tax relief, public school funding and border security as his top three priorities. He called property taxes the biggest concern for constituents.

In a questionnaire published by the Fort Worth Report in September, Mizani said he wants to "put ourselves on a serious path over the next five to 10 years to rein in property taxes by controlling government spending, using surplus revenues responsibly, and reforming the school finance system."

Campaign finance filings covering Feb. 22 through June 30 showed a wide fundraising gap. Mizani raised $161,080 in political contributions and spent $218,977. Brennan raised $10,527 and spent $6,960 during the same period, according to the Fort Worth Report.

What's next

Mizani will serve a two-year term representing the northeast corner of Tarrant County. The next legislative session begins Jan. 12, 2027, and ends May 31, 2027.
