Southlake residents can drop off used cooking oil and grease around the clock starting Nov. 1 as the city's Holiday Grease Roundup returns for an eighth year.

The collection station at the Public Works Operations Center, 1950 E. Continental Blvd., will accept used cooking oil and grease 24 hours a day, seven days a week through Jan. 31, 2027, according to My Southlake News.

Last year's roundup set a program record. Southlake residents contributed 150 gallons of used cooking oil and grease for recycling.

The City of Southlake partners with the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTCOG) on the program.

Collected grease is recycled into biofuel, a renewable energy source, rather than clogging pipes.

That's the practical reason behind the roundup. Fats, oils and grease poured down kitchen drains can build up inside pipes and cause sewer blockages, backups and overflows.

Those backups can mean costly plumbing repairs for homeowners and strain on the city's wastewater system.

Before heading to the drop-off, residents should let cooking oil and grease cool completely and store it in a sturdy container for transport.

Addison Thummel, reporting for My Southlake News, noted that over 45 North Texas communities participate in the broader Holiday Grease Roundup campaign coordinated through the NCTCOG's Defend Your Drains North Texas program.
