The Southlake Public Library wants neighbors to help celebrate a quarter-century by decorating paper squares with their favorite library memories.
The library, which opened Sept. 26, 2001, inside Southlake Town Hall, is building a community memory quilt ahead of its 25th anniversary on Saturday, Sept. 26.
Patrons pick up a blank square at the library, decorate it on-site with a written or drawn memory, and drop it in a collection basket. Staff add each finished square to a growing quilt displayed on the library's walls.
No registration is required. Squares are available during regular hours and will remain available through the anniversary date.
The library suggested prompts for anyone staring at a blank square: the first book you ever checked out, a cozy reading corner that felt like a second home, or the librarian who pointed you to the right shelf.
The project is the library's main anniversary effort, announced Wednesday, Aug. 5 on My Southlake News. In its announcement, the library described itself as having quietly become part of thousands of everyday lives since 2001, citing toddlers' first story times, last-minute homework saves and Saturday browsing sessions.
The milestone comes during a banner year for the city. Southlake is also celebrating its 70th birthday with a free Celebrate Southlake block party on Saturday, Sept. 12, at Southlake Town Square, two weeks before the library's own anniversary.
