Republican Alan Blaylock and Democrat Ericka Lomick will face off in a special election Nov. 3 to fill the vacant Texas House District 93 seat in Tarrant County.

Texas Secretary of State Robert S. Howden certified both candidates on Wednesday, Aug. 26, directing that their names be printed on the special election ballot, according to the certification document posted by Tarrant County. HD93 sits entirely within Tarrant County.

The seat opened after state Rep. Nate Schatzline resigned July 2 to take a senior advisory role on election integrity policy in Gov. Greg Abbott's office. Texas Monthly reported that Schatzline earns $275,000 annually in the position.

Two races, one ballot

HD93 voters will see the district listed twice on their Nov. 3 ballots. The special election fills the remainder of Schatzline's current term, which runs from November through January.

A separate regular election on the same ballot determines who serves the full two-year term starting Jan. 12, 2027, as the Fort Worth Report first detailed.

Blaylock and Lomick are the only candidates in both contests.

Six-hour filing window

Abbott issued his proclamation calling the special election on Aug. 20, filed with the Secretary of State's office at noon. The filing deadline was 6 p.m. that same day.

Lomick told The Texan she learned about the special election from Democratic Party officials just two hours before the deadline and submitted her application at approximately 4:55 p.m. Blaylock told The Texan he learned about it the same day and filed.

"The short notice [for filing] created an unexpected challenge, but my team remained focused and completed the filing," Lomick told The Texan via email.

Republican Chair Tim Davis and Democratic Chair Allison Campolo both said they did not know about the special election until Aug. 20, the Fort Worth Report reported.

Key dates

Early voting runs Oct. 19 through Oct. 30. Election Day is Nov. 3. The voter registration deadline is Oct. 5.
