Bowen Family Wines swept all four dry red categories at the 40th annual GrapeFest People's Choice Wine Tasting Classic, which wrapped up Sept. 20 in Grapevine.

The Johnson City winery took Gold for its 2021 Cabernet Franc Reserve, Noble Blend, Mourvèdre Reserve and Montepulciano Reserve. Silver Dollar Winery of Bedford also won four Golds across the sweet red, off-dry white, white blends and blush/rosé categories.

Thousands of festivalgoers cast electronic ballots across ten 90-minute tasting sessions in Historic Grapevine's Cotton Belt Railroad District. They chose from more than 150 wines poured by 40 Texas wineries, according to the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau. Organizers call it the largest consumer-judged wine competition in the nation. Awards were presented at 5 p.m. in the People's Choice Pavilion.

Three Grapevine-based wineries earned medals. Messina Hof Grapevine Winery placed in four categories, winning Gold for its Angel Late Harvest Riesling in the sweet white division. Landon Winery picked up a Bronze for its 2023 Tempranillo and Silver for its Yellow Rose. Housewife Rebellion, which opened its tasting room at 211 E. Worth St. on the festival's opening day, earned Silver in the blush/rosé category for its 2024 Rebel Rosé.

That wine has momentum. The Rebel Rosé won Gold at the 2025 People's Choice competition. Owner Nicole Heere had told the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau in a Tuesday, Sept. 15 profile of the new venue, "My biggest rebellion is drinking wine … I'm a busy wife and mom. That's just how it is!"

Paul Bonarrigo, co-founder of Messina Hof, spoke to the festival's broader reach in a 360West Magazine feature published Sept. 4. He said GrapeFest brings people to taste Texas wines who otherwise would not try them.

The festival has grown from 700 attendees and six wineries at its 1987 debut to more than 225,000 visitors across four days, according to the Grapevine Convention and Visitors Bureau.
