Colleyville Heritage fell 47-29 to Richland on Friday, Sept. 18, at Birdville Fine Arts Complex in North Richland Hills.

Senior running back Jayshon Gibson powered the Royals with 378 yards and five touchdowns, according to MaxPreps. Richland improved to 4-0 on the season. Heritage dropped to 2-2.

The nondistrict loss closed out Heritage's pre-district schedule. The Panthers open District 3-5A Division II play against Lovejoy the following week. Richland begins District 6-5A Division I competition against Carrollton Creekview.

Gibson, a four-star UCLA pledge listed at 5-foot-10 and 200 pounds, entered the season as the Fort Worth Star-Telegram's No. 1 area player to watch. He earned District 3-5A Division I Offensive MVP honors last year after rushing for more than 2,200 yards and 41 touchdowns.

Through four games in 2026, Gibson has rushed for 699 yards and 12 touchdowns, according to the Dallas Morning News.

Heritage quarterback Lane Vargas and receivers Sameer Johnson and Lucas Sunwall provided offensive highlights for the Panthers. Sunwall, a junior, earned district newcomer of the year honors last season after posting 685 receiving yards and eight touchdowns.

Richland head coach Jed Kates praised Gibson after the game.

"It was the Jayshon show," Kates told the Dallas Morning News. "Coaches are only as good as their players, and he is about as special as it gets."

Heritage's next test comes against Lovejoy in the District 3-5A Division II opener.
