Southlake Carroll beat Trophy Club Byron Nelson 38-10 on Friday, Oct. 23, improving to 5-0 in District 4-6A play and extending its winning streak to six games.
The Fort Worth Star-Telegram's Week 9 scoreboard confirmed the final score.
Southlake Style reported that Carroll's defense and special teams drove the win: Dez Bryant Jr. returned two punts for touchdowns and added a rushing score, while Bennet Hunt and Cole Spaeth each returned fumbles for touchdowns. The Dragons also recorded a safety.
Carroll is 6-2 overall after opening the season 0-2 against non-district opponents Allen and North Crowley.
Since those losses, the Dragons have won six straight, beating Keller Central, Northwest Eaton, Justin Northwest, Keller and now Byron Nelson in district play.
The district title picture carries one unresolved question. Southlake Style reported that Carroll can clinch the championship outright with a win over Keller Timber Creek on Friday, Oct. 30.
The Dallas Morning News, in its Week 10 preview, described Carroll as having "already clinched the District 4-6A title."
Either way, the Dragons hold a two-game lead in the standings.
Behind Carroll, second place is a three-way tie. Keller, Keller Central and Northwest Eaton all sit at 3-2 in district, with Byron Nelson and Timber Creek one game back at 2-3, the Dallas Morning News reported.
Southlake Style's season stat totals show production across the roster.
Junior quarterback Hudson Tomcheck has thrown for 1,655 yards and 14 touchdowns through eight games. Senior receiver Brody Knowles averages 106.6 receiving yards per game and leads the team with nine total touchdowns. Bryant adds 60.9 rushing yards per game and five total touchdowns.
On defense, senior linebacker Landon Harris leads with 8.5 tackles per game, and defensive lineman Drew Oakley has five sacks.
First-year head coach Lee Munn's squad entered the season with no returning defensive starters. In coverage published in August by the Fort Worth Star-Telegram, Harris set the standard for the unit: "We just need experience. We have the athleticism, we have the size, so we just have to learn how to play together."
Carroll hosts Timber Creek at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 30.
