Tarrant County residents can apply to serve on the citizen panel that decides property tax protest cases, with a noon deadline on Wednesday, Dec. 2.

The Tarrant Appraisal Review Board (TARB) is accepting applications for the 2027-2028 tax year, according to a TAD press release published by the Fort Worth Report.

The board is separate from the Tarrant Appraisal District (TAD). Created by the Texas Legislature, the TARB gives property owners an independent forum to challenge appraisal values that could not be resolved informally with the appraisal district.

Members sit in panels of one or three to hear testimony and review evidence.

The role carries a significant time commitment. Members must be available full days, Monday through Saturday, from May through July, according to the official application.

Monthly meetings and supplemental hearings continue the rest of the year. Members are compensated $185 per day for hearings, meetings and state comptroller training.

TARB members are classified as independent contractors and public officials, not employees of TAD or the board.

Who can apply

Applicants must be Tarrant County residents who have lived in the county at least two years.

They must be current on property tax payments in Texas or paying under an installment agreement. Anyone who has served all or part of three previous terms is ineligible.

The application also screens for conflicts of interest. Current officers or employees of local governments, appraisal districts or the Texas Comptroller's Office cannot serve. Former TAD employees and board members face restrictions, as do applicants with close family ties to TAD staff or paid property tax consultants.

How to apply

Applications are available at TAD.org under "ARB Member Application." Completed forms must be delivered in person or by mail. The board does not accept applications by fax or email.

Mail applications to TARB, P.O. Box 185519, Fort Worth, Texas 76181-0519. In-person delivery goes to 2500 Handley-Ederville Road, Fort Worth, Texas 76118. Applicants should write "TARB APPLICATION ENCLOSED" on the outside of the envelope.

The TARB can be reached at (817) 284-8884.
